Amtrak yesterday announced it has completed a $4 million project to renovate the G.K. Butterfield Station in Wilson, North Carolina.
The project was completed in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration and in cooperation with the city of Wilson, North Carolina Department of Transportation and CSX, Amtrak officials said in a press release.
Amtrak's Carolinian and Palmetto trains provide daily service to the station. The Carolinian operates between Charlotte, North Carolina, and New York City; the Palmetto operates between New York City and Savannah, Georgia.
The upgraded station now features a 435-foot-long concrete platform with additional lighting, guardrails and signage. The platform includes a sturdy surface for boarding and includes a detectable warning system to alert riders who are blind or have low vision if they are close to the platform's edge.
Amtrak has invested more than $900 million since 2011 in accessibility upgrades and improvement projects at 127 stations across the national network.
