Amtrak will expand its Northeast Corridor high-speed rail service with an additional weekday Acela Express round trip between New York City and Washington, D.C., starting Jan. 28.

The new service will include an 8 p.m. northbound departure from Washington Union Station, arriving in New York Penn Station at 10:45 p.m., and a 9:15 p.m. southbound departure from New York, arriving in Washington at 11:59 p.m.

Both trains will make stops in Washington; Baltimore; Wilmington, Del.; Philadelphia; Newark, N.J; and New York.

"A greater focus on the travel needs of our customers, and the improved utilization of our business assets, is making this much needed high-speed service expansion possible," said Amtrak President and Chief Executive Joseph Boardman in a prepared statement.

The additional service brings to 16 the number of weekday Acela roundtrips between the New York and Washington, D.C.

Recently, Amtrak announced other plans to expand its high-speed rail service. In early 2013, the national intercity passenger railroad expects to begin the process to purchase next-generation high-speed trainsets that will expand seating capacity and provide more frequent high-speed service on the Northeast Corridor.
