Amtrak will begin rail service today at a new regional multimodal transportation center in Alton, Illinois, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced.

Located at 1 Golf Road in Alton, the new facility will replace a train station on College Road that Amtrak has served for decades. The College Road station, which is owned by Union Pacific Railroad and leased by Amtrak, is slated for demolition.

The Alton Regional Multimodal Transportation Center will accommodate higher-speed trains as part of the Illinois High-Speed Rail Chicago to St. Louis program. The center was funded in part by a $13.85 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant.

Riders can download Amtrak's mobile app to access the Lyft ride service app and request a ride to or from the new multimodal center.
