The National Transportation Safety Board yesterday opened the public docket for its ongoing investigation of the 2021 derailment of Amtrak's Empire Builder passenger train near Joplin, Montana.The train was carrying 154 people when it derailed on Sept. 25, 2021, in a right-hand curve on the BNSF Railway Co. Hi Line Subdivision. As a result of the accident, three passengers died and 49 passengers and crew members were injured.The investigation docket includes more than 3,100 pages of factual information, including reports on operations, mechanical, track and engineering, signal and train control, and crashworthiness and survival factors. The docket also includes interview transcripts, photographs and other investigative materials.The NTSB will issue a final report including the accident’s probable cause at a later date, board members said in a press release.
