Eighteen chambers of commerce in Arizona are backing BNSF Railway's $3.2 billion Logistics Park Phoenix project, BNSF announced in a newsletter yesterday.

The Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted a first-of-its-kind meeting on Oct. 21 that brought together local chambers, transportation experts and Maricopa County Supervisor Debbie Lesko to discuss how the BNSF project can best serve a growing Arizona, the newsletter reported. The business leaders provided Lesko with an open letter signed by 15 chambers of commerce across Arizona showing their support for the BNSF project.

The Northwest Valley Chamber's meeting followed the Surprise City Council's unanimous vote on Oct. 7 to formally oppose the project, saying that the rail hub and logistics park would put an undue burden on city infrastructure and public safety services, according to a KTAR News report

At the Oct. 21 meeting, BNSF shared updates on the project’s economic benefits and its ongoing work with state and local transportation departments and the city of Surprise to identify traffic solutions. BNSF also confirmed a significant investment in nearby road improvements, the BNSF newsletter reported.

At the meeting, BNSF General Director of Public Relations Lena Kent said BNSF's proposed facility would be the first of its kind in Arizona, according to a Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce press release. The facility would combine a rail-served intermodal terminal, warehouse space and logistics infrastructure designed to reduce truck traffic, lower shipping costs and ease congestion across Phoenix, Kent said.
