The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has approved a contract between Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Hitachi Rail STS USA Inc. for the creation and installation of a new signal system near Queens Village, New York.
The new system, which is located at the Queens Interlocking complex of switches, will enable the LIRR to improve service along its mainline between Hicksville and Floral Park, and help the new Elmont-UBS Arena Station become a two-way full service stop. The complex is divided into five remote control interlockings that manage switching on the active tracks and provides switching access to the new Elmont-UBS station.
The contract calls for design, fabrication, assembly, delivery, integration and testing of the new signal system. That will include pre-wired central instrument locations, auxiliary huts, track cases, switches, signals and ancillary equipment. The project is part of the MTA’s 2015-2019 capital program.
"Upgrading the Queens Interlocking is a vital component to unlock the full potential of a trifecta of projects: mainline expansion, East Side Access and the new Elmont-UBS Arena Station. As our riders continue to return, they are going to experience a new LIRR," said LIRR President Phil Eng in a press release.
