Metrolink nets $10.5 million to modernize signals, track

The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) has awarded a $10.5 million grant to Metrolink to modernize its signals and track.
The Los Angeles-area commuter railroad will use the funds to replace aging mechanical signals with modern electrical units. Metrolink also will install new switches and crossovers, and upgrade track infrastructure near Los Angeles Union Station.
The project is expected to improve safety, speed and reliability of all Metrolink trains and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains coming into L.A. Union Station, said Metrolink Chair Andrew Kotyuk in a press release.
The project's total cost is $16.3 million, with other funding coming from the state of California and Metrolink.
Metrolink was one of seven agencies to receive funding through California's new State Rail Assistance program.
