North Carolina DOT seeks public input on safety improvements at 18 crossings

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold three public meetings in late November and early December regarding the evaluation of 18 public grade crossings between Neal and Cornwallis roads in Durham. The department is encouraging residents to provide comments and suggestions on potential safety improvements and other changes at the crossings.

NCDOT representatives will answer questions and obtain feedback to develop recommendations for improving the crossings. The recommendations might include the closure of some crossings, NCDOT officials said in a meeting announcement.

The crossing improvements are part of NCDOT’s goal to ensure the safety of passengers and train crews, motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and surrounding communities, they said. For example, a statewide program calls for enhancing highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public crossings; so far, NCDOT has worked to install automatic warning devices at more than 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,100 public crossings.
