The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) earlier this week approved the Camp Chase Railway's (CAMY) request to upgrade a grade crossing in Franklin County.CAMY plans to install upgraded warning devices at the Eureka Avenue crossing in Columbus. The railroad must complete the work by Jan. 30, 2020, PUCO officials said in a press release.The railroad and commission will share funding for the upgrades.Local governments may seek up to $5,000 in funding from PUCO for the cost of crossing safety improvements. Funding comes from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund.PUCO evaluates Ohio's crossings to determine the need for installing active warning devices. Since it began conducting the evaluations, the annual number of train-motor vehicle crashes in Ohio has decreased from 356 in 1990 to 68 in 2017.
