The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) on Monday announced the Kraemer Boulevard underpass in Placentia, Calif., opened to traffic, capping off a $67 million grade separation project. As part of the Los Angeles-area project, temporary tracks for a BNSF Railway Co. line were built south of the existing tracks. BNSF's traffic has shifted back to its mainline, with motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic now passing underneath the rail line.Up to 70 trains — some more than a mile long — travel through the area daily, and rail traffic is expected to increase to nearly 130 trains per day by 2030, OCTA officials said in a press release. The Kraemer Boulevard grade separation is one of seven bridges or underpasses OCTA is building in Anaheim, Fullerton and Placentia as part of the $630 million O.C. Bridges program. Construction on the final three projects began in May and is slated for completion by 2018."Each of these new bridges along the rail line help improve the quality of life for the people who travel through North County with enhanced safety and quicker commutes," said OCTA Chairman Shawn Nelson.
