CN moved over 806,000 metric tons of grain from western Canada during the week of Oct. 16, exceeding its previous record of over 50,000 metric tons, the Class I announced yesterday.
Achieved in week 12 of the 2022-2023 crop year, the latest record follows CN reporting its second-best September for grain movement from the region, with over 2.64 million metric tons moved, CN officials said in a press release.
"We are very proud to have set a new record for the amount of Western Canadian grain moved in a single week," said CN Chief Marketing Officer Doug MacDonald. "We are confident that our railroaders will continue delivering results for Canadian farmers and all of our customers."
CN achieved the record despite an Oct. 5 bridge fire that shut down a CN branch line in northern Alberta. The railroad’s engineering team worked around the clock to address the problem, and about a week later, the track was reopened to moving grain, lumber and other products, CN officials said.
The team was able to mobilize the equivalent of 20 Olympic-size swimming pools of material without incident to fill in where the bridge once stood, they added.
