CN yesterday published its 2025-2026 grain plan along with data from the 2024-2025 grain season.
The Class I moved a record volume of Canadian grain to both domestic and international markets in the past crop year, CN officials said in a press release. The railroad projects that its 2024-2025 Western Canada grain movements will total about 31 million metric tons (MMTs), roughly 1 MMT higher than its previous annual record.
CN anticipates moving between 27 and 29.5 MMTs of grain and processed grain products during the 2025-2026 crop year.
One change this year: CN will distribute empty hopper cars originating from the West Coast as they depart Vancouver, rather than distributing cars at major rail hubs in the Canadian Prairies. In addition, CN plans to produce weekly updates on car orders and supply chain conditions for stakeholders.
"Our grain plan reflects CN’s unwavering commitment to Canadian agriculture and the global competitiveness of our farmers and grain handlers," said CN President and CEO Tracy Robinson. "We’ve taken a comprehensive, end-to-end view of the supply chain by investing where it matters most, collaborating with partners, and ensuring we have the people, equipment and processes in place to move the new crop."
