CN has budgeted $50 million for capital projects in Louisiana and $38 million for work in Iowa as part of its 2025 capital expenditures program.
The funding will go toward track maintenance and strategic infrastructure projects in those states, CN officials said in a press release.
In Louisiana, CN plans to expand capacity in the New Orleans area and make improvements to operations at the Geismar rail yard. In 2024, CN spent $52 million on maintenance and infrastructure projects in Louisiana, where the Class I has 227 miles of track and employs 330 people.
CN also is investing in track maintenance and infrastructure projects in Iowa this year. In 2024, CN spent $30 million to upgrade track on the Osage Subdivision near Cedar Rapids. The Class I employs 258 people and operates 572 miles of track in Iowa.
