Today, Canadian Pacific announced that Paul Haggis was elected chairman. He currently is chairman of the Alberta Enterprise Corp. and C.A. Bancorp Inc.

Haggis also serves as a corporate director of other public and crown corporations, including Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. and Liberty Silver Corp. He previously was president and chief executive officer of the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, and president and CEO of Alberta Treasury Branches.

Haggis was one of Pershing Square Capital Management L.P.’s slate of nominees who won election to CP’s board at the Class I’s annual shareholders meeting on May 17. Shortly after the meeting, CP named Madeleine Paquin acting chair to succeed John Cleghorn, who opted not to stand for re-election. The Class I also named Stephen Tobias interim CEO after former President and CEO Fred Green resigned before the meeting.

“I reiterate that the board is united in its commitment to serving the best interests of CP,” said Haggis in a prepared statement. “We are confident in the depth and breadth of this board and its ability to work with management and all CP employees to serve our customers.”
