Yesterday, CSX Corp. announced it ranked first among U.S. Class Is in the Newsweek Green Rankings of the top 500 environmentally conscious American companies. CSX ranked No. 263 while Union Pacific Corp. was ranked No. 310 and Norfolk Southern Corp. was ranked No. 398. In addition, CSX clocked in at No. 9 in the transportation and logistics category and is listed at No. 379 on the global rankings list, ahead of the other Class Is, CSX officials said in a prepared statement.

The Green Rankings are based on a company’s “green” score, environmental impact, environmental management and disclosure. The criteria is researched and evaluated through a combined effort between Newsweek magazine and environmental analysts Trucost and Sustainalytics.

The ranking recognizes CSX’s continued commitment to environmentally safe practices, CSX officials said. The Class I recently partnered with a graduate student in the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program to research sustainable practices, and continues to pilot new technology designed to reduce emissions and implement sustainable practices.

"Environmental sustainability has been and will continue to be one of CSX's top priorities," said CSX Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Ward.

Other companies listed in the rankings include Wal-Mart Stores Inc. at No. 52; General Electric Co. at No. 63; Jacobs Engineering Inc. at No. 94; United Parcel Service at No. 101; W.W. Grainger at No. 155; J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. at No. 345; The Timken Co. at No. 431; and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. at No. 462.

Meanwhile, Florida East Coast Railway L.L.C. (FEC) recently received the Jacksonville Electric Authority’s Environmental Stewardship Award for outstanding performance in industrial pretreatment in 2010 — the fourth year the regional has received the honor. The award recognizes companies that achieve 100 percent compliance for discharging industrial wastewater during the pretreatment process.

The railroad is continuously focused on being “an environmentally friendly neighbor,” and the award “reflects the dedication and professionalism of our environmental department,” said FEC Vice President and Chief Engineer Robert Stevens in a prepared statement.
