Military magazine honors UP's recruitment efforts

Military Times EDGE magazine recently named Union Pacific Railroad a “Best for Vets 2011 Employer.” The Class I is among three companies ranked in the highest category, platinum, according to UP.

The magazine's rankings are based on veteran recruiting, corporate culture and reserve policies. The magazine recognized UP for its training and education programs, military recruiting policies and hiring track record — one out of four new hires is a veteran, according to the Class I. The railroad’s recruiters seek military personnel by attending military job fairs, supporting transitional assistance programs and regularly visiting major military installations, UP officials said in a prepared statement.

“Union Pacific … takes pride in employing veterans and military reserve personnel,” said Barb Schaefer, senior vice president of human resources. “Military veterans have the knowledge and training to be successful in our company.”

BNSF Railway Co. also is ranked in the platinum category. Since 2005, BNSF has hired more than 4,000 veterans. The Class I currently employs more than 7,000 former military personnel, or about 18 percent of its workforce
