CSX representatives last week attended the groundbreaking for Novelis Inc.'s $2.5 billion low-carbon aluminum recycling and rolling plant now under construction in Bay Minette, Alabama.

CSX will provide rail service for the plant, the first fully integrated aluminum mill built in the United States in 40 years, CSX officials said in a press release.

The future plant’s location is a CSX Select Site. The facility will have an initial capacity of 600 kilotons of finished aluminum goods capacity per year. More than half of the plant’s capacity will be used to serve growing demand for aluminum beverage can sheet in North America, which is driven by consumer preference for more sustainable packaging, CSX officials said.

The plant will also serve the automotive market.

Site work on the facility is underway. Novelis expects to begin the plant's commissioning in mid-2025.

"The Novelis project is what the CSX Select Site program is all about," said Arthur Adams, CSX’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. "Working with state and local officials, we pave the way for companies like to Novelis to choose sites with efficient transportation, utility access and community support."
