CSX yesterday announced it completed the cutover on a hump lead extension project at its Avon Yard in Indianapolis.
The project resulted in more efficient freight movement through the yard and added rail-car handling capacity, CSX officials said in a press release.
CSX and contractor crews added 3,500 feet of new track, extending the existing hump lead to 8,000 feet. The extension enables Avon Yard to process full length trains in a single cut, improve remote control switching movements and reduce dwell time, CSX officials said.
Work on the project began in May 2025 and included placing ballast, moving new tracks into place and tamping. The construction was completed incident and injury free. As a result of the extended lead, Avon Yard can handle an additional 200 to 300 rail cars per day.
"The goal is efficiency — switching cars as quickly as possible so they don’t spend unnecessary time in the yard," said David Clark, CSX's director of construction engineering. "This extension gives our teams the room they need to operate more effectively and deliver better service."
CSX also created a short video about the project, viewable here.
