CSX yesterday announced it has completed construction and installation of seven new spans of the Poplar Bridge across the Nolichucky River in North Carolina, a critical step in rebuilding the Blue Ridge Subdivision rail line that sustained massive damage during Hurricane Helene in September 2024.
The rail line handles 14 million gross tons of freight annually. With the bridge now ready for track to be laid, restoration of the key transportation corridor continues to advance efficiently, CSX officials said in a press release.
“The new Poplar Bridge features a ballast deck, which improves under-clearance and enhances its survivability in future severe weather,” said Jacob Metcalf, CSX assistant chief engineer of bridges. “This structure is built to be stronger and more resilient.”
Helene devastated 60 miles of CSX's line in Tennessee and North Carolina. CSX is partnering with state and federal agencies as well as local communities to restore it. The Class I has emphasized sustainability throughout the project, recovering and reusing four of the bridge’s original 95-foot spans.
The company has also worked to minimize environmental impacts along the Blue Ridge Subdivision.
