CSX Corp. has begun construction work on its Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal, a $60 million investment aimed at providing western Pennsylvania shippers direct intermodal freight access, the Class I announced yesterday.

The project will redevelop the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Yard, which operated for more than 100 years on the 70-acre site, which is located in McKees Rocks and Stowe Township in Allegheny County.

"After many months of hard work from dozens of experts and partners working to strengthen transportation options and the area economy, the first phase of project development is complete, including planning, design, permitting and property acquisition," said CSX President Clarence Gooden in a press release.

Gooden thanked CSX's partners on the project, including Stowe Township and the McKees Rocks Borough, Allegheny County, Allegheny Conference on Community Development and the McKees Rocks Community Development Corp.

Since the site of the facility was announced two years ago, the project has received support from local, county, state and federal officials, as well as from economic development associations, community organizations and other stakeholders, CSX officials said.

"We look forward to supporting CSX through construction and into the operations phase, which will allow Western Pennsylvania’s businesses to efficiently connect to the global marketplace," said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.
