CSX recently partnered with the Florida National Guard to complete its largest rail operation in 17 years, transporting more than 1,000 pieces of military equipment in a historic deployment. The operation marked the Guard’s largest rail load and deployment since World War II, CSX officials said in a press release.
The mission involved moving 1,265 military vehicles, systems and containers from Fort Stewart, Georgia, to Birmingham, Alabama, where the equipment was interchanged for its final destination in Fort Irwin, California.
Meanwhile, CSX yesterday announced the launch of a new mobile collision safety system, which leverages technology to add a layer of protection for its workforce. The system combines GPS, cameras, radar and lidar to provide comprehensive coverage around heavy equipment, CSX officials said.
“This system tracks objects as they enter the red zone—the high-risk area around machinery—and determines if there’s a collision risk,” said Elvis Higgins, CSX director of innovation. “If a risk is detected, the system takes appropriate action to stop the equipment and prevent an incident.”
The initiative was born out of a growing concern over machine-to-machine collisions and employees working in high-risk zones. Bharat Sharma, lead senior software engineer, described the system as a critical “safety net” that enhances protection for employees working near moving equipment.
