Rail News: CSX Transportation

Opportunities abound for railroads and trucks in intermodal sector, CSXI's Herwig says

Emerging technologies and better cooperation between railroads and truckload carriers are presenting intermodal opportunities for both modes. That’s the message CSX Intermodal President James Hertwig delivered during the Truckload Carriers Association’s annual meeting held earlier this month in Orlando.

The truckload industry faces long-term challenges, such as fuel costs and driver shortages, which continue to make intermodal transportation an attractive option.

"Railroads want to work with the truckload carriers," said Hertwig. "Intermodal transportation combines the efficiency of rail with the flexibility of trucks.”

In addition, intermodal terminals are more “trucker-friendly” thanks to advanced gate processing, he said.

"New ramp-to-door-to-ramp services allow truckload carriers to reposition empty equipment automatically out of backhaul markets in pursuit of a new load," said Hertwig.

CSXI recently introduced QuickQuote, a 24-hour online quoting and tendering door-to-door service tool aimed at brokers.
