The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) yesterday issued the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the 2025-2026 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant program, with more than $2 billon in federal funding available for passenger and freight railroads' projects.
Grant applications are due by June 22. CRISI grants will be awarded to projects that reduce congestion, support ridership growth on passenger railroads, improve regional railroad infrastructure, and develop programs that prevent trespassing and reduce injuries and fatalities, FRA officials said in a press release.
This year's grant program includes revamped criteria that prioritizes "safety, the American family and workforce development, job quality and wealth creation," according to the FRA.
The NOFO outlines all application criteria and includes information about future web-based training and technical assistance available to applicants. Since its start in 2017, the CRISI program has provided nearly $6 billion to U.S. railroads — including regionals and short lines — for various projects.
