President-elect Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion emergency relief plan to address the COVID-19 pandemic includes much-needed funding for some of the nation's hardest-hit public transit agencies.
The $20 billion in funding would help the agencies maintain routes for essential workers and prevent massive labor cuts and drastic service reductions, said Matt Casale, director of the U.S. PIRG Environment Campaigns.
"This investment will be critical in ensuring that [transit] agencies across the country are able to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic without decimating service," Casale said.
Biden unveiled his proposed relief plan in a televised speech last night.
"Public transportation has served an essential role during this pandemic and is an indispensable part of the social and economic recovery of our communities and our country," said American Public Transportation Association President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Skoutelas. "Despite the tremendous challenges the public transit industry faces, we continue to provide millions of Americans the ability to get to work, school, grocery stores and health care appointments."
