On Sept. 15, CN pleaded guilty in a Prince Rupert provincial court to a charge of violating the federal fisheries act in relation to the deposit of pesticides in or around waters frequented by fish.
CN was fined CA$2.5 million, which will be directed to the government of Canada's environmental damages fund, according to a press releases issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
On Aug. 28, 2017, a spray truck was observed discharging a mist as it traveled along a CN corridor between Terrace and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. A subsequent inspection and investigation confirmed that the pesticides sprayed along the rail line were harmful to fish, ECCC officials said.
The ECCC led an investigation into the incident and worked in cooperation with the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service. On May 27, CN pleaded guilty to one violation under the provincial Integrated Pest Management Act.
