The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved the CTrail Hartford Line’s System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) officials announced yesterday.

The action is the first SSPP to be approved by the FRA in the country, CTDOT officials said in a press release.

The plan was submitted by service provider TransitAmerica Services Inc./Alternate Concepts (TASI) in July, and serves as a guidebook on how to safely operate a passenger railroad.

Passenger-rail ridership in Connecticut is beginning to recover following a decline in March and April due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CTDOT officials said. As the state enters the next phases of reopening and in anticipation of increased ridership, CTDOT has increased the cleaning of trains and station facilities.
