FTA solicits input on proposed updates to state safety oversight regs

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is seeking public input on proposed updates to State Safety Oversight (SSO) regulation requirements.

Comments are due Jan. 16, 2024. The proposed changes include ensuring that SSO Agencies (SSOAs) have the authority to enter transit-rail facilities without prior notice to perform safety inspections; requiring SSOAs to collect safety data from the transit-rail systems they oversee; and developing and implementing risk-based inspection programs, FTA officials said in a press release.

In addition, the proposed rule calls for updates and clarifications to the current regulation on the types of safety events that transit-rail agencies must report to their SSOA and FTA within two hours of occurrence.
