STB extends comment period for proposed Uinta Basin Railway

The Surface Transportation Board's (STB) Office of Environmental Analysis has extended the public comment period for the draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the proposed Uinta Basin Railway in Utah.

The comment period has been extended from Jan. 28 to Feb. 12. The period previously was extended from Dec. 14 to Jan. 28.

The DEIS was issued Oct. 30, 2020, for the proposed railway in the counties of Carbon, Duchesne, Uintah and Utah. The Seven County Infrastructure Coalition is seeking the board's authority to construct an 85-mile line from two terminus points in the Uinta Basin near South Myton Bench and Leland Bench to an existing Union Pacific Railroad line near Kyune, Utah. The coalition is working with Rio Grande Pacific Corp. — which would operate the line — and others to develop the project.

The DEIS evaluates the line's potential environmental impacts, recommends a Whitmore Park alternative as the environmentally preferred alternative and outlines the preliminary recommended mitigation measures.
