The Surface Transportation Board's Office of Environmental Analysis (OEA) late last week issued a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Tongue River Railroad Co.'s proposed construction of a 42-mile line in Montana.

The draft EIS analyzes the potential environmental impacts that could occur if the railroad builds the line, which is proposed to run between Colstrip, Mont., and the Ashland/Otter Creek areas of the state.

The OEA is soliciting public comment on the statement until June 23 [Note: The STB has extended the comment deadline until Aug. 24.] Beginning June 8, OEA and other agencies will host hearings in Ashland, Miles City, Colstrip, Lame Deer and Forsyth, Mont., to receive public opinions on the draft. Two online public hearings will be held June 17.
