Short-line tax credit extension not part of Senate's transportation bill, ASLRRA says

A one-year extension of the Section 45G short-line tax credit was not incorporated into Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (S. 1813), the two-year, $109 billion surface transportation bill the Senate passed last week, according to the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).

The extension had been proposed as a bill amendment by Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.). But the amendment contained other provisions unrelated to the tax credit that did not “enjoy a similar measure of support,” ASLRRA officials said in an item included in the association's latest “Views & News” newsletter.

“When voted on by the full Senate on March 13, the Roberts amendment did not receive sufficient votes for passage,” they said.

The association and its lobbyists will continue working to get the tax credit —which expired on Dec. 31, 2011 — extended for 2012 and beyond, ASLRRA officials said. The association has been seeking a six-year extension.
