The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced billions in grants awarded to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro), Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and New Jersey Transit as their operations continue to deal with the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
MTA will receive $6.2 billion, the largest one-time grant awarded in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) history, as part of American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP) funding. L.A. Metro will receive $1.24 billion and NJ Transit will obtain $1.6 billion under the same legislation. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will receive $332.5 million.
The funding comes from a pool of more than $30 billion allocated to public transportation via ARP. $2.2 billion in remaining funds will be distributed later this year, USDOT officials said in a press release. No local share is required for any of the grants.
"As our nation’s transit systems recover from COVID-19, the American Rescue Plan funds ensure that they continue to provide service to the many Americans who depend on transit to get to essential jobs, health care and vaccine appointments," said FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez.
