The Transportation Services Index (TSI) couldn’t shake out of a slump in February. The month’s index totaling 109.2 decreased 0.3 percent compared with January’s level — the second-straight monthly decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The TSI, which has fallen 20 out of 38 months since January 2004, now has dipped 2.6 percent below its May 2006 peak. February’s index also declined 0.2 percent compared with February 2006’s level.
Through 2007’s first two months, the index decreased 0.8 percent compared with the same 2006 period.
February’s Freight TSI of 107.7 dropped 0.2 percent compared with January’s level and 1.8 percent compared with February 2006’s index. The year-to-date Freight TSI declined 0.7 percent.
February’s Passenger TSI of 111.0 decreased 0.3 percent compared with January’s level but increased 2.1 percent compared with February 2006’s index. Through 2007’s first two months, the Passenger TSI dropped 1.2 percent.
The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
