On May 3, the U.S. Department of Transportation granted $9.9 million to Valley Metro Rail Inc. to help fund engineering, project management, environmental studies and support services for the proposed Central Phoenix light-rail project.

Serving Sky Harbor International Airport and Arizona State University, the 20-mile double-tracked line would run through downtown Phoenix to Tempe and Mesa, Ariz. The project includes 26 stations, and a centrally located maintenance and storage facility.

So far, the project has received $33.7 million in federal funds.
