Sound Transit ponders purchasing additional light-rail vehicles

Sound Transit’s finance committee recently recommended spending $13.9 million to purchase four light-rail vehicles to operate on the Sea-Tac International Airport extension.
Scheduled to open in December 2009, the two-mile line would extend the Central Link systems — which currently is under construction and scheduled to open in mid-2009 — to 16 miles.
If approved by the full board next week, Sound Transit will order the additional cars from a Kinkisharyo International L.L.C./Mitsui & Co. (USA) Inc. joint venture, which currently is building 31 light-rail vehicles for the agency.
Sound Transit will use the cars to provide six-minute headways during peak periods on the airport extension.
