The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) recently received the Federal Highway Administration's Award of Excellence for its I-485/South Boulevard light-rail station.
The facility — which features a 1,100-space parking deck and rooftop playfield — earned top honors in the Intermodal Transportation Facilities category. The award recognizes transportation agencies' efforts to design facilities that improve mobility and are sensitive to the environment, according to CATS.
The station was built on a site adjacent to an elementary school. The facility's rooftop playfield is used by the school's students.
