• Alstom obtained a $202.1 million contract from Swedish rolling stock company AB Transitio to supply 23 regional Coradia Nordic trains, which will be used by transport authorities Nortåg AB and Västtrafik AB. Scheduled to be delivered in fall 2010, the electric multiple unit trains will feature four articulated cars and reach speeds of up to 112 mph.
• Siemens obtained a $136.8 million contract from Finland's Helsinki City Transport to renovate the agency's metro network. Siemens' Mobility Division will supply a driverless metro system, communication-based train control, operations control center, signaling system and onboard communication systems. The fully automated metro system is scheduled to be implemented in 2013.
• Lat-Lon L.L.C. received a patent for its solar-powered GPS container tracking system, which provides container location worldwide using either a low earth satellite or GSM/GPRS cellular technology.
• LRM Industries L.L.C., a joint venture between Envirokare Tech Inc. and NOVA Chemicals Inc., obtained a contract from Eastern Rail Corp. to manufacture thermoplastic composite infrastructure components for the rail industry.
• HAX Technologies named Mickey Tomlin vice president of operations for subsidiary HAX Signal, which supplies heavy- and commuter-rail signal construction services, including turn-key project installations, product retrofitting, field wiring and project management.
