After implementing a fare increase, fuel surcharge and two rounds of service cuts during the past year, officials at the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) didn't expect to post ridership gains in 2008.
So, they were pleasantly surprised when year-end figures showed the agency gained 5.4 percent more passengers in 2008 vs. 2007, marking the sixth-straight year of ridership growth. GCRTA carried 57.9 million passengers on its rail and bus systems. Rail ridership rose 2.6 percent.
