Desert Lightning joins the race for high-speed rail to Sin City

Another team has thrown its hat into the ring in the bid for building high-speed rail service between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Genesis High Speed Rail America L.L.C. (GHSRA) recently announced its plans to look into building a 200 mph, dedicated high-speed line that would connect Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, Ariz. In addition, the line would include a stop in Palm Springs, Calif. GHSRA also is proposing connections with airports and a travel time of two hours or less between each city.
The proposed “Desert Lightning” project, which is expected to cost between $35 billion and $40 billion, would be funded through a public/private partnership. Currently, GHSRA is seeking government funding to do a study of all potential economic, feasibility and environmental issues “so when it comes to the big money to do the project, it can be wisely spent,” GHSRA Chairman Duane Wilder said in a video press conference.
GHSRA is a subsidiary of the Wilderdeem Group, which is based in New York City. The company has been planning the Desert Lightning project since August 2007.
