The Illinois Department of Transportation, city of Springfield and Sangamon County recently contracted Hanson Professional Services Inc. to prepare a local study and environmental documents focusing on high-speed and freight-rail traffic through Springfield.
Scheduled to be complete in spring 2011, the study will analyze alternative rail corridors to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic once high-speed trains operate near the city.
Last week, the Illinois DOT received more than $1 billion in federal stimulus funds to begin implementing high-speed service between Chicago and St. Louis.
