Rail News: High-Speed Rail

High-speed rail petition posted on White House website

Last month, the Obama Administration launched a new “We the People” program, through which people can create online petitions to garner support for a topic of their choosing.

Today, “Jake J” from Fairfax, Va., created a petition urging the administration to make further investments in high-speed rail.

“Many of the projects that have been funded have been for projects that will result in half-fast passenger rains that run on privately owned freight-rail tracks,” the petition reads. “Only electrified trains running on dedicated tracks can achieve top speeds of 220 mph, and speeds like that are the only way that rail transportation will be able to compete for travel market share and stand on its own financially.”

If a petition gathers 25,000 signatures within one month of posting, the petition will be reviewed by policy experts at the White House, who will issue an official response.
