Building a statewide high-speed rail system will boost southern California’s economy, according to a recently issued report from the University of California at Irvine’s Institute for Transportation Studies.

The California High Speed Rail Authority’s (CHSRA) project will create more than 127,000 permanent new jobs in the region by 2035 and provide $701 million in income to workers who otherwise would have remained unemployed during the construction phase of the project, according to the report, titled “Thinking Ahead: High-Speed Rail in Southern California.”

“Cities with a high-speed rail station will grow and transition into hubs of commerce. Regions with commuter connections to the high-speed rail system will take advantage of development opportunities,” said CHSRA Chairman Curt Pringle during a conference held in Irvine to discuss the report. “This report is a reminder that high-speed rail can provide communities tremendous opportunities to reinvent themselves and prosper in the process.”
