On July 19, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Port of New Orleans officials dedicated a new $40.3 million cold storage facility at the Henry Clay Avenue Wharf.

New Orleans Cold Storage and Warehousing Co. Ltd. (NCOS) will lease and operate the 140,000-square-foot facility, which will refrigerate various agricultural products, including poultry. NOCS currently operates other cold storage facilities in New Orleans, Houston and Charleston, S.C.

The project included the demolition of a 50-year-old dockside transit shed at the Henry Clay terminal, and stabilizing and dredging two break-bulk vessel berths to a minimum 35-foot draft. The two berths provide direct access to global vessel trade via the Mississippi River.

The cold storage facility can freeze up to 1.25 million pounds of product daily and store 38 million pounds of frozen goods. The facility is in close proximity to the port’s Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal, which is served by switching services provider the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad Co. and offers connections to BNSF Railway Co., CN, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad.

The facility will create additional efficiencies for growing refrigerated container trade, port officials said in a prepared statement.
