Indiana River & Rail Terminals has expanded its capacity for handling barge shipments of steel and other cargo at the Ports of Indiana-Jeffersonville by 40% to 350,000 square feet, IRRT announced yesterday.

A joint venture between the Ports of Indiana and Superior River Terminals Indiana, the terminal operator is the largest cargo operator on the river. It serves 2,200 acres at the Jeffersonville port and Indiana's Mount Vernon port, IRRT officials said in a press release.

By late 2024, the port was nearing capacity for steel shipments, prompting IRRT to lease its fourth building at Jeffersonville. The added capacity opens the door for more opportunities and improvements, including Foreign-Trade Zone storage, heavy lift cargo, rail transloading and support for higher cargo volumes.

"We’re not just adding square footage, we’re adding opportunity," said IRRT President Jonathan Lamb. "This expansion is about meeting demand and staying ahead of the curve. We’ve seen consistent double-digit growth since 2022, and adding new warehouse space ensures we can continue to serve our customers with speed, flexibility and reliability."

The Jeffersonville port features on-site rail switching via MG Rail Inc. and offers connections to CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and the Louisville & Indiana Railroad.
