After a slight decline in March, the Port of Long Beach’s volume rebounded in April. The Los Angeles-area port handled 531,090 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 9.5 percent compared with April 2010’s 485,059 TEUs.

Import volume jumped 12 percent to 241,245 TEUs and export volume rose 10.4 percent to 130,155 TEUs. Empty container volume increased 3.2 percent to 113,659 units.

“Port terminals handled 270,107 TEUs of import containers, almost 30,000 TEUs more than a year ago,” port officials said in a monthly volume report. “Exports [were] aided by a weaker dollar and growing demand abroad.”

Meanwhile, the Port of Los Angeles reported total April volume of 617,272 TEUs, up 3.7 percent year over year. Imports rose 3.3 percent to 312,360 TEUs, exports climbed 5.7 percent to 167,448 TEUs and empties inched up 2 percent to 137,464 TEUs. Total loaded container volume increased 4.2 percent to 479,808 TEUs.
