The Port of Long Beach handled 774,935 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo in March, down 5.2% from the same period in 2025.

Despite lower cargo flow, the port was the busiest container gateway in the United States in March and the entire first quarter, port officials said in a press release.

Imports in March declined 1.6% to 374,412 TEUs, while exports inched up 0.5% to 104,554 TEUs. Empty containers moving through the port dropped 11.1% to 295,970 TEUs. In Q1, the port processed 2,390,225 TEUs, down 5.7% year over year.

The volume decrease is not due to impacts from the conflict in the Middle East, but is instead related to the timing of U.S. tariff policies and record volumes in 2025, Port of Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba said in a media briefing. While the impact of the conflict isn't yet reflected in the port's cargo volume, the conflict is creating uncertainty for global supply chains as ships are rerouted and costs go up, he added.

Pacific Harbor Line serves the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles and connects the ports to the national rail network.
