Yesterday, container shipping and logistics firm NOL Group announced it renewed a contract with Union Pacific Railroad concerning containerized cargo transportation services in the United States. The agreement extends a decades-long relationship in which UP has served as the firm’s lead intermodal rail service provider, NOL officials said in a prepared statement.

The long-term contract covers APL's intermodal operations, NOL’s liner shipping business and APL Logistics’ auto-related activities in North America.

“Intermodal rail transport is one of our core strengths, and we’re pleased to continue providing this service through Union Pacific,” said Steve Schollaert, NOL’s senior executive vice president of trans-pacific trade.

UP moves containerized cargo for NOL’s APL shipping line from ports in Seattle, Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif., to major APL inland hubs, including those in Chicago, Memphis, Tenn., and Columbus, Ohio.

"APL is Union Pacific's largest intermodal customer and we have been APL's lead intermodal provider since the 1980s,” said John Kaiser, UP’s VP and general manager-intermodal, in a statement. “The combination of APL's premier West Coast port capabilities and Union Pacific's unmatched intermodal market coverage allows APL to provide its customers with comprehensive, fast and reliable products.”
