The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) in Sydney, Nova Scotia, recently launched a marketing campaign to promote the advantages of developing an international container terminal at the Ports of Sydney.
 
CBRM recently agreed to purchase about 500 acres of waterfront land for the proposed container terminal. The municipality plans to explore a long-term concession agreement with an interested terminal operator.

Located in North America's easternmost harbor, the Ports of Sydney are closest to the Suez Canal and situated six miles from a sea buoy marking the Great Circle Route from Europe and the Mediterranean, CBRM officials said in a prepared statement.

In addition, the ports offer unrestricted double-stack rail access to major inland cargo clusters in the U.S. Midwest along with the potential for network feeder services along the U.S. East Coast, they said. The ports are served by RailAmerica Inc.’s Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway, which interchanges with CN in Truro, Nova Scotia.
 
All permits have been received for construction of a container terminal and labor agreements are being negotiated with the International Longshoremen's Association, CBRM officials said.
