The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) started 2024 with strong cargo and auto volumes. Total volume in January rose 3.4% from the previous year's mark, reaching 667,346 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
"This strong total outpaced port activity in pre-pandemic January 2019 by 7.2%," PANYNJ officials said in a news release. "January 2024’s volume was also 5.3% above December 2023 figures."
Auto volume registered a double-digit gain in January, as 35,302 vehicles moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey, up 22.1% year over year.
The port was the nation's second busiest for loaded imports and exports in January at 447,514 TEUs, a 2.6% gain from January 2023's level. Imports rose 5.8% to 342,790 TEUs, while import empties climbed by 27.1%.
Exports decreased 6.7% to 104,724 TEUs, but export empties increased 4.9% to 217,878 TEUs on a year-over-year basis.
Rail volume in January fell 1.3% to 53,013 containers from the previous year's figure.
