The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is accepting applications for funding of transportation improvement projects under the Multimodal Transportation Fund.

PennDOT will evaluate and select applicants based on criteria such as safety benefits, regional economic conditions, technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency, and operational sustainability, according to a PennDOT press release.

"The fund allows us to assist communities with needed transportation improvements that otherwise may not move forward," said PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards. "This process represents an opportunity for worthwhile local projects to secure the support needed to come to fruition."

The department has $40 million in grants available for fiscal-year 2017-18. Applications are due by Dec. 16. Grant recipients will be announced next year for funding that will become available in July 2017.
