The first phase of a new rail yard at the Port of Brunswick in Georgia will begin operations by the end of this month.
Located on the south side of Colonels Island Terminal, the new yard is expected to increase the port's rail capacity from five to 10 trains per week. The port handles high volumes of roll-on/roll-off cargo
The first phase was a $22 million investment to increase the port's annual rail capacity to move more than 340,000 automobiles annually, up from 150,000 autos currently, Georgia Ports Authority officials said in a press release. The Colonels Island terminal is served by Golden Isles Terminal Railroad, which interchanges with CSX and Norfolk Southern Railway.
Slated for completion in 2028, the $54 million second phase of the intermodal yard project is designed to boost capacity to 590,000 autos per year.
